Práctica

Jeff Midghall es un artista británico contemporáneo, nacido en Liverpool — pintor, escultor y buceador. Primero estudió un BSc en Metalurgia. Tras graduarse pasó una década viajando y trabajando por el mundo, y luego volvió al Reino Unido para estudiar Bellas Artes: un BA (Hons) en escultura y pintura, seguido de un posgrado en educación.

Los retratos se han expuesto en la National Portrait Gallery (Londres) y en la Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Edimburgo) como parte del BP Portrait Prize, y en el Williamson Art Gallery and Museum (Birkenhead). Fue seleccionado, muy elogiado y más tarde finalista del Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize en 2021 y 2023. Fue seleccionado para Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2020 y se retiró antes de la grabación tras un fallecimiento en la familia.

Las esculturas se han expuesto en la McLellan Gallery (Glasgow) y en Bury Art Gallery & Museum, en las exposiciones anuales del Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts y de la Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

Enfoque

Al pintar suele partir de una referencia fotográfica y después la subvierte. Las fotografías pueden ser un punto de partida; la imagen se reimagina a través de la materialidad de la pintura — empaste denso, veladuras finas, rasguños y rascados, ampliando o reduciendo — sin perder el origen de la imagen. El objetivo no es una copia fotorrealista, sino una reinterpretación personal.

La práctica incluye también el grabado (la serie de serigrafías Movement), dibujos que responden al clima y al aumento del nivel del mar, pinturas inspiradas en el mundo submarino tras años de buceo, y escultura ensamblada a partir de objetos encontrados y domésticos.
