After The Flood sketch

Part of the ongoing series “After the flood”.

The series started in response to climate change and the growing crisis of melting polar ice and rising water levels. It also brings in, both overtly and subtly, other issues affecting the world around us. Everyday surroundings and the sometimes turbulent changes they are undergoing sit in the same image.

After The Flood Oil on canvas, 100 cm x 70 cm. Here the palette although colourful has a general bluish hue, reflecting the appearance given by the light underwater, where the red wavelength disappears at quite shallow depths. Even the reds in the work are cool. The twelve small red outlined fish can be thought of as the hours of a clock or the months of the year counting down, their red outlines reminiscent of street warning signs, their gouged vertical markings of counters on a wall of the number of lost species each year. The gravestone like playing cards, lined up like dominoes ready to fall showing how we are gambling with our future letting the sea slowly die. The number 4, the unluckiest number in China, as its sound is like the word for death, placed on the goldfish, thought to be lucky in China to show balance (China, one of the World’s biggest polluters. Now taking huge strides to reduce emissions and become more environmentally aware) It is also a link to my childhood in Liverpool, the yellow submarine of Thunderbird4, International Rescue, two words that stand for the only way forward for the preservation of our oceans, a multinational clean-up. A Lionfish, entering stage right, one of the most invasive species in the seas, now found in many ecosystems around the globe where it wreaks havoc upon indigenous species, due to being released from aquariums by people ignorant of what damage they’re doing. Two penguins, lost looking for ice appear amidst the Planck-Einstein equation E = ⱱh, (which for me as a non physicist could be interpreted as, we have less ozone due to emissions, more light in greater frequencies(v) enters the atmosphere therefore more energy(E), more heat less ice). There are other symbols, links and references but that would be telling too much.
